Supported Sheltered Houses

An Abbeyfield House allows our residents to maintain as independent a lifestyle as possible whilst having the reassurance of a supportive network of people close at hand. This includes paid staff, volunteers on the House Committee and friends.

  • All single rooms have en-suite facilities with either bath or shower
  • Residents recreate a home from home by bringing their own furniture.
  • Communal dining and livings rooms are provided where residents can meet as and when they wish
  • Three meals a day are included, with lunch and a tea or supper served in the dining room and food provided for breakfast which residents take in their own rooms at a time to suit themselves

The cost of living at an Abbeyfield House is another welcome surprise. Costs, often supported by housing benefits or similar entitlements due to residents, are considerably lower than you might imagine, and cover all expenses including food and utility bills. Our fees also cover staff salaries, house maintenance and council tax.

Fees can be met by self funding or from within what anyone in receipt of benefits can receive, topped up with pension, but leaving sufficient cash available for day to day expenses.

Each house has a Resident Housekeeper/Manager apart from Downfield Road, where residents are linked via a Tunstall Alarm system to a local call centre and to Bristol City Council's mobile warden team.

It has recently been announced that our Registered Residential Care Home in Redland is due for closure by the end of 2009. Although the house was highly regarded for the standards of care it provided, it simply cannot meet the modern expectations of quality accommodation without major renovations. It will remain an Abbeyfield Bristol Society house and will be redeveloped to provide appropriate Supported Sheltered Housing in the near future.
